How E2EE Works on WhatsApp:

End-to-End Encryption (E2EE): The Bedrock of Personal Message Privacy
Central to understanding WhatsApp's data sharing is its use of end-to-end encryption (E2EE). This is WhatsApp's strongest privacy feature, designed to ensure that the content of personal communications remains private between the sender and recipient.


Signal Protocol: WhatsApp leverages the robust Signal Protocol (developed by Open Whisper Systems, now Signal Foundation) to implement E2EE for all personal messages, calls, photos, videos, voice messages, documents, and status updates.
Keys on Devices Only: Encryption keys are generated and stored exclusively on the users' devices. Neither WhatsApp nor Meta holds these keys.
Encryption and Decryption: When you send a message, it's encrypted on your device and can only be decrypted by the recipient's device. This means that even if a message is intercepted while in transit or stored on chile phone number list WhatsApp's servers, it remains unreadable.
No Third-Party Access: Because WhatsApp does not possess the decryption keys, it cannot read, listen to, or access the content of personal (one-to-one and group) messages and calls. Encrypted Backups (Optional): While messages themselves are E2EE, backups stored in cloud services like Google Drive or iCloud are typically encrypted by the cloud provider, not WhatsApp. However, WhatsApp introduced an optional end-to-end encrypted backup feature, allowing users to protect their cloud backups with a password or a 64-digit encryption key known only to them. If this feature is enabled, even the cloud provider cannot access the backup content.
